Preston Bailey
2023 Contributor
Preston began his 46-year teaching career at EHS in 1966 and has helped countless students navigate the complexities of mathematics. His strong faith and giving spirit earned him the love and respect of students and staff alike. In addition to his teaching career, Mr. Bailey has been contributing to E-town Athletics for 50 years, during which he faithfully kept the scorebook under five head coaches: Ray Vencill, Roy Woolum, David Rogers, Gary French, and James Haire. His service, loyalty, and dedication to excellence has never wavered. Mr. Bailey is the epitome of what Panther Pride represents. He has been a steadfast presence within the rich heritage of EHS athletics and has helped shape many players’ lives over the years. During his tenure, Mr. Bailey has been a part of two state runners’ up teams (1972 and 2021) and one state championship team (2000).
Antwain Barber
Boys Basketball 2014
Antwain led Elizabethtown to a state championship in 2000. He scored over 70 points in the 2 final games, scoring 41 points in the semi-finals. Antwain was 1st team all-state, M.V.P. of the State Tournament, and Member of the Kentucky All-Stars. Scholarship to UK.
Doug Barnes
Boys Basketball 2021
Doug began his athletic administration in 1996 with EHS and stayed until he fully retired in 2015. During those 19 years, Doug served as Athletic Director for 17 years and was also the boys’ assistant basketball coach under James Haire, where they led the boys’ basketball team to the regional finals 5 times and won the 2000 Kentucky High School Athletic Association Sweet Sixteen Boys Basketball championship. As an Athletic Director, Doug developed the single Booster Club model appointing a representative from each sport, that is still in effect today. Coach Barnes was a founding member of the 5th Region Athletic Directors’ Association and served on the 5th region Athletic Policy Board for 8 years as well as 10 years at the State level as the 5th Region Representative on the Board of the Kentucky High School Athletic Directors’ Association. Doug was the 5th Region Athletic Director of the Year and a finalist for the Kentucky High School Athletic Director of the Year. Coach Barnes developed a philosophy at EHS that district and regional championships were expected, but the only banners that hang are state level accomplishments.
Bil Bennett Sr.
Baseball, Boys Basketball, Football 2017
Bill was a three (3) sport athlete playing football, basketball, and baseball where he earned a total of 9 letters; 4 in baseball, 3 in football, and 2 in basketball. He was the team captain in both football and baseball and was named the outstanding back in football for the 1952 season. Bill was the first football player from EHS to be awarded a full scholarship to a Division IA school. Bill attended the University of Tennessee where he was a member of both the 1956 Sugar Bowl championship team and the 1957 Gator Bowl championship team. Bill is in The University of Tennessee Football Hall of Fame.
James "Buzzy" Best
Boys Track & Field, Football 2015 Buzzy was an outstanding football player on the undefeated team in 1957. He was also a member of the EHS Track Team. He played college football at WKU. In his later years, he became a member of the Elizabethtown School Board and established a scholarship fund for EHS students. He is elected as an athlete and contributor.
Barry Billings
Boys Cross Country, Boys Soccer, Boys Track & Field 2018
Barry was a 3 sport athlete. He competed in soccer, cross country, and track; soccer being his main sport. In soccer, he was all-district 3 years, all-region and all-state 2 years. In 1992, Barry was offensive player of the year, in addition in 1991 & 1992 was captain of the soccer team. In cross country, Barry was a member of the 1991 & 1992 state championship team. Track and field, he competed in long-distance running. Barry won the prestigious Andrew Clay Johnson award. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University, where he played soccer all 4 years.
Terry Bird
Football 2013
Terry played football under Coach Bill Hogg. Terry was All-Conference and All-State in 1960-61. He was selected to play in the East-West All-Star game in 1961. Terry received an athletic scholarship to play at the University of Tennessee, where he was an offensive lineman. Terry starred in two bowl games won by UT during his playing days. Terry says “Playing football at EHS helped prepare him for a greater challenge in his life of leading an infantry platoon in Vietnam. Football was a confidence builder and he is thankful for that opportunity.”
James Bradley
Baseball, Football 2017
James was a two (2) sport athlete playing football and baseball. James earned a total of 7 letters; 4 in football and 3 in baseball. On the football field, he had two 1000 yard rushing seasons. His senior year James was selected as captain of both the football and baseball teams as well as being all-state honorable mention in football. After graduation, James received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy where he played 4 years of football and was the team captain his senior year.
Mark Bradley

Mark is considered by many to be the best athlete to play sports at EHS He was a starter and letterman all four years in both baseball and football, and was a starter and letterman his last two years in basketball. Mark helped the Panthers win multiple district and regional championships. He played in state tournaments in basketball and baseball and helped bring home a state baseball championship. Mark was All-State his senior year in three sports; baseball, basketball, and football. Mark was offered multiple scholarships in baseball and football but chose to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers. A first-round draft pick. He was a part of the 1981 World Series Championship Dodgers team.
Mike Brumfield
Boys Golf 2017
Mike played 3 years of varsity golf and qualified for the state tournament in his junior and senior seasons. He was the regional champion in singles his senior year. Mike received a golf scholarship to Morehead State University where he enjoyed a successful career. Mike was inducted into the Morehead State University Hall of Fame.
Kristin Buchanan Fiepke
Girls Tennis 2022
Kristin was a leader on the tennis court, winning the singles region championship in 1979, 1980 and 1981. At the age of 18 was one of the top tennis players in the state of KY while being ranked #1 or #2, and went on to capture the KY state closed tournament in the 18 & under division in 1981. She would walk on at the University of Kentucky her freshman year, but by winning the walk on tournament she earned a scholarship for her final 3 years at UK. She not only excelled on the court but off the court as well, she was honored as part of the ALL-SEC Academic Team in 1984.
Mike Coyle
Football 2014
Mike was a member of the 1957 team that went undefeated before class football. Elizabethtown ended the season by beating a Shelbyville team, also undefeated, 14-13. Mike played offense and defense. The team scored 369 points and held the opposition to only 26. Mike was all-state in football. He also won the Andrew Clay Johnson award. Scholarship to UK
Joel "Cy" Cyganiewicz
Boys Swimming & Diving, Girls Swimming & Diving 2019
Coach Cy brought EHS swimming to its pinnacle, coaching swimmers to 15 individual state titles, 12 of which resulted in also setting state record. Cy led the aqua Panthers to 3 Boys state titles, 3 boys state runner up titles, 1 girls state title, 3 girls state runner up titles, 5 combined state titles, as well as 20 regional titles between the girls and boys. At the time of the realignment in 2000, EHS still held the Western regional Records in the boys 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, girls 200 and 500 freestyle, as well as the relay titles for the girls 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle Relay, and 400 Freestyle Relay. Coach Cy coached Outstanding Male Swimmer of the Year in 1989 and 1990 and the Outstanding Female Swimmer of the Year in 1989, 1990, and 1991 at the Regional level and 1991 at the State level. Cy himself was the Men’s Coach of the year in 1987, 1988, and 1990, as well as nominated as a National Coach of the Year in 1989. Coach Cy coached swimmers at EHS to National Junior Olympic Qualifications, top 16 national rankings, member of US National Teams, US Open Qualifications, and US Olympic Team Selection Meet qualifications. Coach Cy already has 3 of his swimmers who are inducted members into EHS’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
H.Y. "Chip" Davis
Baseball, Football 2015
Chip was a two-sport star athlete. In baseball, Chip was captain and leader of an outstanding team. He was an All-Region performer and was named MVP. Football was his other sport where he was a three-year starter and starred as the quarterback for the team in 1992 and 1993.
Mattew Deneen
Boys Basketball 2018
Matthew was the leader of the 1986 Region Championship basketball team. In the state tournament that same year, he scored 28 points against a 7-foot center who went on to play at the University of Louisville. Matthew was all-district and all-region 2 years. Matthew was both the Region player of the year and PAC player of the year. He attended Georgetown College on a basketball scholarship.
Vince Donnelly
Football 2013
Vince was a three-sport athlete at Elizabethtown High School, which were the only sports offered at that time. Vince was outstanding in football, making the All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-State team. He was the team captain, leading scorer, played defense, and handled the punting duties. His senior year, the team’s record was eight wins with only one loss. The loss was to Owensboro in the first game of the season played at Owensboro. Owensboro was ranked No. 1 in the State and the final score was 19-14. Vince received football scholarship offers from UK, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee. He chose UK, but later transferred to Centre where he lettered in football and track.
Zipp Duncan
Boys Basketball, Football 2016
Zipp was a 3 sport athlete. He was All-State in football 2 years and All-Area 3 years. In basketball, Zipp was not expected to be a big factor but a good contributor. Zipp became outstanding, and by tournament time, he put on a show, scoring 30 points in the District Tournament to down an outstanding Meade County team. He was All-Area, All-Region, and Honorable Mention All-State. He was an untiring worker and better still very unselfish. Zipp received a football scholarship to UK and became a 3-year starter, making all SEC-2nd Team.
Jackie Dupin
Baseball, Boys Basketball, Football 2015
Jackie was one of two EHS players to ever compete in the KHSAA Basketball, Baseball, and Football State Finals. Jackie was a good basketball player, exceptional football player, and a four-year starter in baseball.
Don English
Boys Basketball 2022
Don was at the forefront of the 1965 & 1966 basketball teams that went 20-6 and 23-6, respectively. Don was part of the district championship team in 1966. He was named to the All-District, All-Region, and All-Conference, and All-state honorable mention teams. He averaged 18 points in 1966, and after high school continued his basketball career at Sullivan College, Henderson State College and then at the US Air Force. He ended his playing career playing four years professionally in Germany.
Wesley Freeland
Boys Track & Field 2016
Running was Wesley’s game. Wesley was part of the State Championship team in both 1991 and 1992. In 1994 and 1995, Elizabethtown was a strong contender, being Runner-up both years. Wesley was a part of the 3200 Relay team that won the gold medal. Wesley received a track scholarship to UK and later became a Naval Officer.
Gary French
Boys Basketball 2016
Gary was an important part of the 1st EHS basketball team to go to the State Basketball Tournament. Not only did they go, but they went to the final game of a 16-team tournament. Gary was All-Area, All-Region, and Honorable Mention All-State. Gary in 1982 became the Head Coach of the Panther’s program. In 1986, he won the region and returned to the State Tournament as a coach. In 1990, the Panthers under Coach French lost only 2 games, and Gary was named the Coach of the Year. Gary finished his educational years as Superintendent of the Elizabethtown City Schools.
Mark Galvin
Baseball, Football 2017
Mark was a two (2) sport athlete playing football and baseball where he earned a total of 7 letters; 2 in football and 5 in baseball. Mark excelled in baseball and was the 1998 News Enterprise Sophomore of the Year and The News Enterprise Player of the Year in 2000. Mark was all district, all region, and all semi-state his sophomore, junior, and senior years (1998, 1999, 2000). Mark was the KY Gatorade Player of the Year as well as 1st Runner up for Mr. Baseball his senior year. Mark ranks in the top 10 all time in the state of KY in career wins (3rd), season wins (4th), career shutouts (4th), career strikeouts (8th), and career lowest ERA (9th). Mark was also the Andrew Clay Johnson Winner. After graduation Mark attended the University of Kentucky on a baseball scholarship.
Dr. Chris Godfrey

Chris was state champion in 500 yd. freestyle 1983, State record holder in 500 yd freestyle 1983, member of the state championship 200 yd. Medley relay 1984, Chris was a high school All-American honorable mention 1984, scholarship to UK- where he was co-captain of the team. Chris was also a winner of the Andrew Clay Johnson Award.
John Godfrey
Boys Swimming & Diving 2016
John was a 5-year letterman in Swimming. John was part of 3 State Championships and 2 Runner-ups. He swam in several different events, but the backstroke was what he excelled in. He was a part of the 200 Medley Relay team that won the Championship 3 years, and in the 1986-87 season set a state record time of 1:40.48. John was captain of the swim team his senior year, was winner of the Andrew Clay Johnson Award, and received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Chris Gohman
Baseball, Boys Basketball, Boys Track & Field, Football 2019
Chris was a rare four (4) sport standout athlete playing football, basketball, baseball, and ran track. Chris was voted as the 2008 News Enterprise 1st Team- Offense, the 2008 All- State honorable mention, the 2009 1st Team Courier-Journal All- State, as well as the AP 1st Team All- State. Chris was voted as the wide receiver of the year by Bluegrass.com and a Max prep 1st Team All- American. In Chris’s sophomore season he recorded 662 receiving yards, 8 touchdowns, 3 interceptions. In Chris’s junior season he bested his previous year’s numbers by recording 951 receiving yards, 56 interceptions, and 12 touchdowns. Chris’s senior year he recorded 1,743 receiving yards, (fifth highest in state history), as well as 85 receptions, and 26 touchdowns (fourth highest in state history). Chris graduated averaging 18.2 points and 9.6 rebounds per game in basketball, voted as the 2000 All- District and All- Region team. Chris was voted as the News Enterprise sophomore baseball of the Year. In Chris’s track season, he placed second in the 100- Meter dash and helped his 4 x 100 M Relay and 4 x 200 m Relay to a first-place finish and was voted part of the All- State Track Team.
Nute Haire
Baseball, Boys Basketball, Football 2017
Nute was a three (3) sport athlete playing basketball, football, and baseball and was known as the ultimate team player. Nute was instrumental in bringing EHS boys basketball its first regional championship. Nute was a member of the 1972 boys basketball team that were region champs as well as state runner up. Nute was a member of the 1969 football state championship team where he played key roles in the team’s success. Nute was all region and all state in both basketball and football and played football at Western Kentucky University for 2 years.
Vince Hancock
Football Coach
Coach Hancock was coach at EHS from 1967 through 1977. He and his staff won 100 games during his 11 seasons. In 1969, his E-town team was State 2A State Champions. Coach Hancock was KHSAA Coach of the Year in 1969. In 1971, he was Lexington Herald Leader Coach of the Year. In 1970, he coached the West All-Stars. Coach Hancock had seven conference championships, six district championships, and three regional championships, two state Class AA runner-ups as well as the 1969 2A championship. He was highly successful in all of his coaching jobs.
Mike Harmon
Baseball, Football 2017
Mike was a two (2) sport athlete playing football and baseball where he excelled at both. He was a member of the 1967 and 1968 state runner-up football teams and a member of the 1969 state champion football team. His senior year he was voted co-captain by his teammates on a team that posted a record of 13-0. In baseball, Mike played in the outfield on the 1970 state championship team. He hit for the cycle during a state tournament game. Mike was all state in football in 1968 and 1969 and received a football scholarship to Eastern Kentucky University.
Jeff Harris
Boys Cross Country, Boys Soccer, Boys Swimming & Diving, Boys Track & Field 2021
Jeff was a 4-sport athlete, competing in Soccer, Swimming, Cross- Country and Track. Jeff played soccer for the Panthers for three years and swam for the Panthers for one year, but his most success came as a runner. As the 1991 Boys’ team captain, Jeff led by example as he was the 1991 5th Region individual champion and Kentucky State individual champion for cross- country, en route to leading the Cross-Country Panthers to a boys’ team state title that same year. That spring on the track, Jeff earned another individual state title in the Men’s 3200m and took runner-up in the 1600m. Jeff went on to attend the United States Military Academy and was a letterman all four years in cross-country, 2 years for Indoor track and 2 years outdoor track. Jeff made Dean’s list each semester during his last 2 years, graduating West Point in 1996. Upon graduating from West Point, Jeff served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, earning a Bronze Star.
Kim Rogers Hartlage
Girls Golf 2023 Coach
Kim Hartlage served as Head Coach for the EHS golf team from 2008 to 2015 and is regarded as the best overall golf coach in E-town’s history. During her tenure, the EHS golf team earned the title of runner up in the state tournament in 2015 and placed 3rd in the state tournament in 2014. She also led EHS to five regional championships, and one regional runner up title. As a player, Kim was the regional champion in both 1984 and 1985 and is one of the top five golfers (men OR women) from EHS. She also served on the EHS Athletic Hall of Fame board for several years. Coach Hartlage has always been passionate about the pursuit of excellence and is always the first to help any athlete.
Mitchell Henry 2019
Nathan Huggins
Baseball, Boys Basketball, Football 2018
Nathan excelled at 3 sports, football, basketball, and baseball. Nathan is one of five to participate in the state tournament in all 3 sports. In football, he was all-district 3 years, all A state 1st team. He won 10 varsity letters while at EHS, 4 in football, 3 in basketball, and 3 in baseball. He not only was an outstanding athlete at Etown but spent the majority of his career as a coach and administrator at Etown. Recently became superintendent of Caldwell County Schools. He attended Western Kentucky University on a football scholarship.
Al Inman
Boys Soccer 2018
Soccer was Al’s game; in 1994, he was District Tournament MVP, all-region, and 1st team all-state. In 1994, he was the captain of the soccer team and set the scoring record. Al was a member of the state runner-up team in 1992 and the region runner-up team in 1994. Al was invited to play in the Kentucky All-Star game and was named 1st team all-American in the mid-east region. He attended Georgetown College on a soccer scholarship.
Dr. Gary Inman
Baseball, Boys Basketball, Football 2014
Gary was a 3-year letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. Each of those 3 years he played in the 5th Region Basketball Finals. In football, he was the QB, place kicker, and punter. In 1967 the Panthers posted a 12-1 record and was the first EHS team to reach the state championship game. The state title was lost on the final play. Gary was all-state in football, scholarship to U.L. and was inducted into U.L. Athletic Hall Of Fame 2001.
Harry Irwin
Football 2024
Harry was a standout offensive and defensive lineman for the Panther football team. He was a three-year starter at both offensive and defensive tackle. Harry was the leading lineman of the 1967 state runner-up football team and was All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-State in 1967. Harry also played in the 1967 East/West All-Star game. After graduation, Harry earned a football scholarship to Eastern Kentucky University, where he was a four-year starter. He earned All-Conference selections for two years and was a Small College All-American his senior season.
Bert Jenkins
Baseball, Boys Basketball 2016
Bert was a 2 sport athlete. In 1953 and 1954 he was All-District, in 1953 he was All-Region, and in 1954 he received Honorable Mention All State in Basketball. He was Co-Captain of the football team. Bert was an outstanding student as well, serving as Senior Class President, Beta Club Member, and won the prestigious Andrew Clay Johnson Award. He was a Division 1 Basketball Player at Georgia Tech 1954-56.
Bill Jenkins

Bill was an outstanding three-sport athlete at E-town High. He was a four-year letterman in football and was named to the All-State team in 1960. He was also a four-year letterman in basketball and also an All-State in 1961. Bill was a three-year letterman in baseball and named to the All-Region team in 1960 and 1961. Bill was awarded a scholarship to UK upon graduation and earned three letters at UK. He was a member of the famous “Thin Thirty” team at UK. Not only was Bill an outstanding athlete but a member of the Beta Club. He later taught school and retired in 2005.
Kean Jenkins

Kean was a 3 sport athlete, Football, Basketball, and Baseball, but would have been outstanding in any sport he tried. He was a natural all-around athlete. In 1944 he was chosen All-District, and in 1945 was Co-Captain of the basketball team. He was aggressive, quick, and a great ball handler. His Baseball and Football Careers were cut short because of the war. Kean’s best sport was Football because of his physical talents but was limited due to only 2 years of the sport being offered. He was a die-hard E-town supporter all his adult life.
Louis Jenkins

Louis was a 3-sport athlete at EHS and excelled in football, basketball, baseball. Louis was the star of the famous 1957 Burley Bowl, when the football Panthers beat Shelbyville, which earned Jenkins a spot on the All- State Honorable Mention Team and all MKC, as one of the leading scorers in the State. On the baseball diamond, Louis was part of the 1958 and 1959 teams that finished as runner ups in the regional baseball tournament. From 1957- 1959, Louis was the leading hitter and outstanding shortstop for the Panthers baseball team and was one of the leading scorers in the state, which earned Louis a spot on the All- District Team.
Robyn Jennings
Girls Basketball, Girls Volleyball 2022
Robyn was an all-around athlete excelling in basketball and volleyball. On the basketball court she scored over 1000 points in her career that started at Ft Knox, before playing at E-town for three seasons. Her honors include 2005 Kentucky All-Star, 3rd team All-State as senior averaging 14 points and 8 rebounds a game. She also was nominated for the McDonalds High School All-American game. Her junior campaign came with a 5th region MVP scoring 27 points in the semi-final game and being named All-Area MVP. She captured all-area honors 5 times in both basketball and volleyball. Also competed in track and softball. She went on to a terrific college career at the University of Evansville.
Alex Jones
Girls Basketball 2019
Alex Jones was a 4 year stand out letterman as part of the Lady Panther basketball team. Alex lead the Lady Panthers to 4 district championships, 3 region championships, and a state runner-up in 2009. Alex was named as the All- Area Player of the Year, the 5th Region Player of the Year, and selected to the 1st Team All- State. Alex was recognized as the runner-up for Miss Kentucky Basketball during her senior year and was also chosen as a member of the Kentucky- Indiana All-Star game. Alex finished her EHS career with a high of 29 points scored in a game, a high of 18 rebounds in a game (twice) and was the first player in school history to score over 1000 points and have over 1000 rebounds. When Alex graduated, she ranked first for the Lady Panthers for total points scored in a season (627), first for total rebounds in a season (370), first for most free throws made in a season (466), first for most 2- point field goals (701), first for double- doubles (46), ranked third in steals for season (390), and fifth in assists (304). These amazing stats help Alex lead the Lady Panthers to a four year record of 117 wins with only 17 losses.
Kristina Covington Jones
Girls Basketball 2014
Kristina has a great ability to make everyone on her team better. The EHS team in 1997 was runner-up in Basketball but came back she led the team to a state championship. Kristina was all-state in both 1997 and 1998. She was the 2nd runner in Miss Ky. Basketball. She was a Kentucky all-star and a member of the 1000 point club. Scholarship WKU.
Valerie Jones
Girls Basketball 2022
Valerie paved the way for the successful girls basketball program that we now know at E-town. She had many firsts for E-town; she was the first female to get a full scholarship at the division 1 level, and the first to be named to the Kentucky All-Star team. She had many individual accolades such as the Coaches Association Regional player of the year, a member of the All- State, All-Region, and All-District teams during her career at E-town from 1993 to 1997. Her senior year she was awarded the prestigious J.B. Mansfield Award, which honors a female basketball player that exemplifies academic achievement, basketball ability, but most importantly citizenship and sportsmanship. She was the leader on a team that was ranked as high as 16th in the nation, won the Louisville Invitational, Lady Invitational of the South, and was the KY State Runner Up. Val was also 1st team All-State in soccer her junior year and was the area player of the year in soccer her sophomore year. Val would go on to play four years of basketball at Miami University.
David Knowles
Baseball, Football 2021
David was a member of the EHS football and baseball teams throughout his EHS career, graduating in 1973. He was a 1972 All- State 1st Team selection in football and went on to be the starting offensive tackle and co-captain at Indiana University. After college, he was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 1977 and made the 53 man roster only to be forced into retirement in 1978 due to injury.
Matthew Knowles

Matthew’s credentials are almost unbelievable. He was named all-state 1st team in football and baseball both, and 3rd team all-state in basketball. Only a select few can claim these accolades at EHS. Received a scholarship to Wake Forest University, later transferred to Georgetown College, and in 2014 was elected to Georgetown’s Hall of Fame.
Ernie Lewis
Baseball, Football 2013
Ernie was a two-sport star at Elizabethtown High School. He quarterbacked the football team to the 2A State Championship in 1969. Ernie had equal success in baseball as a pitcher, winning the State Championship in 1970. He pitched all three games. Ernie was All-State in both sports. He also was named “All Southern” by the Orlando Sentinel. He also was named in the Scholastic Magazine and Sun Kist All-American teams. He played his football at UK.
Stephanie Livers
Girls Swimming & Diving 2015
Stephanie was a member of the Girls state high school championship 1992. She won state titles in 500 free in 1989, 90, 91, 92, and 200 free in 1989 and 1991. She also was a member of 6 relay state titles. Broke several state records and was voted outstanding female regional competitor 1989, setting 4 regional records. National high school All-American in 1991 and 1992. Scholarship to the University of Tennessee.
George Lynch
Football 2023 Coach
George Lynch has held multiple coaching positions over his career at E-town. During his 1986 to 1996 tenure as head football coach, he was named Class 2A Coach of the Year in 1987 and led the 1987 and 1992 teams to become region champs—each team just one win away from state championship appearances. His teams also won three district championships. In addition, he served as assistant coach for the EHS swim, softball, basketball, baseball, and football teams from 1972 until he became head coach and Athletic Director of both T.K. Stone and EHS. Prior to his coaching career, he was a three-sport athlete at Campbellsville High School, where he played quarterback under E-town legend Vince Hancock. The student athletes were always more important to Coach Lynch than wins and losses. He always strived to be a role model to each student, whether they were an All-State champion or the kid at the end of the bench. Many students fondly remember Coach Lynch as teaching lessons far beyond sports—doling out lots of laughs and common sense, as well as solid advice for young people to help guide them through their young years. He has spent much of his life in service to EHS and the student athletes.
Kris Maffet
Boys Golf 2024
Kris was a star on the golf course for the Panthers. He began his varsity golf career as an eighth grader and went on to play in five state tournaments. Kris not only had individual success but also led the Panther golf team to team success as well. He was a part of a Panther team that won district championships two years, regional championships two years, and both a 4th and a 7th place team finish at two state championships. As an individual, Kris was a three-time district champ, a four-time regional champ, a 4th place finisher at the state championship, and a state championship runner-up. Kris furthered his playing career at the University of Louisville and at the professional level after graduation.
Eddie Mason

Eddie played his early years of basketball at West Point High School, where he did it all, but with the closing of that school, he transferred to Elizabethtown his senior season. Eddie broke school records at both West Point and EHS for most points scored in a game. He was named to the All-Region team his only year at E-town. He played on the West team in the East-West All-Star Game. Eddie received a scholarship to UK where he played one year and transferred to Tennessee Tech. He was a tremendous free throw shooter and connected on more than 80% of his free throws.
Dana Schubeler McCurry
Girls Basketball 2015
Dana was a leader on the Lady Panther Basketball Team. She was named Gatorade Player of the Year in 1998 and a Miss Kentucky Basketball finalist. Dana was an All-State tournament selection while leading EHS to the state championship.
Bobby McMahan

Three sport athlete - outstanding halfback, who lettered his only three seasons at E-town. While football was his best sport, he also lettered in basketball and baseball. Being an outstanding athlete at EHS pales in comparison to his loyal support of EHS athletics over the years. He has helped raise money for many projects and contributed his time and services any time he is asked. Bobby’s support was so outstanding and notable that the Elizabethtown Board of Education awarded him the School Bell Award, which is the highest award the Board can give. The honor was given at the Chamber of Commerce Awards night in July 2008. His nominee tells of many former students he has assisted after their playing days at EHS.
Tim Miller

Tim was a 3 sport athlete. Tim was a 3 year letterman in Football, 4 years in Baseball, and 3 years in Basketball. Tim scored 25 touchdowns in his career, despite his size. George Wright, sports columnist, wrote, "Tim is a strong runner... One of the best in school history." Tim was also Captain of the Football team his Senior year. Tim received a Football scholarship to EKU, but later he transferred to Murray and played Baseball.
Tim Mudd

Tim was the head coach of the Lady Panther basketball team from 1994 until 2016. In his 20-year tenure as the Lady Panthers Head Basketball Coach, Tim Mudd has an 80.54% win rate, with a record of 563-136. Sixteen of his seasons produced a 20+ win season, including five 30+ win seasons. Coach Mudd led his Lady Panthers to eighteen District Championship Titles between 1996 and 2016, eight 5th Region Championship Titles in 1997, 1998, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2014, 2015, and 2016, Kentucky High School State Runner- Ups in 1997, 2009, and 2014, and State Champions in 1998. Coach Mudd ranks as the 9th All- Time winningest Coach earning him the Courier Journal Girls Basketball Coach of the Year in 1997 and 2009, the Lexington Herald Girls Basketball Coach of the Year 2009 and 2014, and the AP Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2015. Coach Mudd had 12 former players selected as Kentucky All- Stars, and the 2016 Miss Basketball.
Thomas Murley

In 1994 and 1995 Kentucky State Champion in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. A two-time Footlocker National Finalist. Thomas won the State Cross Country Championship his sophomore, junior, and senior year. Thomas was an All-American in cross country at Stanford University his senior season; Thomas’ track credentials are also outstanding. He also was an outstanding student.
Ron Myers
Baseball 2013 Coach
Ron Myers coached Elizabethtown Baseball for 30 years, compiling a record of 716 W - 302 L, a percentage of 69.9%. The baseball team under Coach Myers won two State Championships and was runner-up two times. Coach Myers’ teams had 23 District Championships and 19 Regional Championships. Coach Ron Myers was an outstanding baseball player himself, playing at Western Kentucky University.
Roger Dale Nichols
Boys Cross Country 2015
Dale was an outstanding distance runner in cross country during his junior and senior years, winning the Region in 1967 and 1968. In 1968 he finished third in the state meet. As a track star, Dale was a 2A champion, setting a state record in the two-mile. He ran for UK in college.
Steffphon Pettigrew

Steffphon was the most prolific scorer for the Panther basketball team as a three-year starter. During Steffphon’s tenure with the Panthers, he averaged 18.6 points per game during his sophomore season and 22.1 points per game during his junior season. During Steffphon’s senior year, 2 of the team’s key starters were out with injuries for much of the season. As the competition knew this, Steffphon was usually double and tripled teamed as the key offensive weapon for the Panthers. Despite the intense coverage put on Steffphon, he managed to twice score 50 points in a game and averaged an astounding 32.7 points per game as the leading scorer in the entire state of Kentucky. Steffphon led the Panthers to a Region title in 2005, ultimately reaching the Elite 8, and in 2006 the Panthers were ranked number one in the polls for most of the season. Steffphon was voted the 2007 Region Player of the Year and was also voted as Mr. Basketball, the title given to the best high school basketball player in the State. Steffphon went on to play the Kentucky -Indiana All-Star game where he was given the coveted #1 jersey, and also competed in the Derby Classic, winning the 3- point shooting contest, was voted the MVP in 2006 for the King of Bluegrass Tournament, the Toyota Classic, and The Marion County Christmas Tournament, as well as the 2007 Lafayette Pre Season Classic.
While Steffphon is most notably remembered at EHS for his amazing performance on the basketball court, he also played football for the Panthers for one season in which he made All- State and was considered to be one of the State’s leading receivers in 2007.
Zack Pitts

Zack was a two-sport athlete for the Panthers, playing both basketball and baseball. He was a dominant pitcher and a dangerous hitter. As a pitcher, Zack had a record of 12-4 with 150 strikeouts. He was also a .300 hitter during that time. Zack was a member of the News Enterprise All-Area Baseball Team and was a three-time All-District selection. Zack was selected as the News Enterprise Player of the Year his senior year. He was also named All-State Honorable Mention his senior season and played in the West All-Star Game twice. He was a recipient of the Andrew Clay Johnson Award.

Bill Jr. was a two-sport athlete, quarterback of the football team and participating in track. Bill was 1st Team All-State in football and qualified to participate in the State Track Meet. Elizabethtown was runner-up in the State Championship game under Bill’s leadership. Bill received a scholarship to UK where he had an outstanding career.

Bill Sr. was All-Conference and All-State in football, 1957. He was an outstanding all-around athlete, playing basketball on the regional runner-up team. He was All-District and All-Regional in basketball. Bill Sr. also qualified for the State Track meet as well. Elizabethtown won the Burley Bowl in Shelbyville in 1957 before football was divided into classes and at the time equal to a State Championship. Bill Sr. received a scholarship to UK where he was the quarterback. He had a great career.

Chuck Rawlings
Chuck was an outstanding basketball player at Elizabethtown when he led the Panthers to their first Regional Championship and a spot in the Sweet 16 (State Tournament). Chuck was All-District, All-Region, and first-team All-State in 1972; his senior year. Chuck and the Panthers went all the way to the finals of the State Basketball Tournament, losing in the finals to Owensboro. Chuck received a scholarship to W.K.U. and had an excellent career.
Chris Reedy

Chris was a 3 sport athlete excelling in football. He was a member of the 1986 basketball team that advanced to the state tournament. In track, he participated in the shot put, discus, and the 4x440. He was all-district and all-region in the shot put and finished 4th in the state in the shot put. Football was his first love and in 1986 was listed by Courier-Journal as the top prospect making honorable mention all-state. He was a 2-way starter on offense and defense. His senior season EHS was undefeated in the regular season. Chris was also honored with 1st team all-state as an offensive lineman. He attended the University of Kentucky on a football scholarship.
Will Rice

Will was a multi-sport athlete at E-town, who always played both ways on the gridiron. Not only did he star on the football field, but he also played baseball, basketball and was a member of the track and field team. Will’s teammate once commented “I look like a little leaguer, while Will’s got textbook form.” He lettered in football all 4 years, was named all-area offensive sophomore of the year, three times picked on the first team all-area team, two-time Louisville Courier Journal 3A first team as offensive tackle, Lexington Herald Leader named him to the All-State team as a defensive tackle his junior year, and he played in the East-West All-Star game his senior year. He would go on to Vanderbilt University on scholarship.
David Rogers

David was the tennis coach at EHS for 12 years. The boys' tennis team had a record of 170 wins - 15 losses. The girls' team record was 150 wins and 15 losses. Each team boys and girls won 9 region championships. 17 players under his guidance went on to play college tennis. In 1998-9, David was Kentucky high school Coach of the Year. He was also a finalist for National Coach of the Year.
Jenna Sallee

Jenna was a five-year letter winner for the girls’ tennis team, where she compiled a record of 90-18. Jenna was a five-time singles winner of the Lincoln Heritage Conference Tournament from 2007 to 2011 and was the region champion in singles three years in a row from 2009 to 2011. The EHS girls’ team also won the regional championship four years in a row from 2008 to 2011. Jenna played in the state tournament numerous years and earned a 9-16 seed for two of those years. She received two prestigious tennis awards from USTA KY—the Most Improved Player in 2009 and the Female Sportsmanship Award in 2011. Jenna was a three-time winner of the Tennis Player of the Year and was selected for All-State in high school. She was also the recipient of the Andrew Clay Johnson Award in 2011. Jenna continued her tennis career at Campbellsville University after graduation.
Doug Sexton

Doug was a 2 sport star athlete at EHS, making all-state in football and baseball his junior and senior year. Doug was a team leader playing linebacker, tight end, and did the team kicking in football. In baseball, he was the team catcher and power hitter, outstanding athlete. Scholarship to UK in football.
Nathan Sexton

Nathan loved basketball. As a natural leader, Nathan truly led by example and motivated his teammates to work hard and sacrifice for the benefit of team. That motivation helped Nathan earn sophomore of the year in 1998 by the News Enterprise. Continuing his dream to win a basketball state title, in Nathan’s Senior year, he had 20 rebounds in the Championship Game lifting the Panthers to a State Championship in 2000 and earned MVP honors in an earlier tournament game against Johnson Central. Nathan is the all- time leading rebounder at EHS, which helped him earn player of the Year honors in his senior season.
Robert Shearer

Coach Shearer served as both the Panther girls’ basketball coach as well as the cross-country coach at EHS. He re-established the Lady Panther basketball program in 1975 and was head coach until 1986. In 1981, he became the first coach to guide the Lady Panthers to the region title and on to the Sweet 16. Coach Shearer was also a very successful cross-country coach, where he led the team to a third-place finish in 1993 and to runner-up finishes in both 1994 and 1995. Coach Shearer also guided the cross-country team to two state championship titles in 1991 and 1992. We honor Coach Shearer for the profound impact his mentoring has had on EHS Panther athletes and students.
Dawne Durbin Swank

Dawne was a state champion in 1980, event 100-yard hurdles. She was state runner-up in the 220-yard dash. In 1981 she was runner-up in 100-yard hurdles and 220-yard dash. Dawne also won Mason Dixon 50-yard hurdles and 220-yard dash in 1981. First female to win Andrew Clay Johnson Award.
Natalie Greenwell Sweeney

During her career, Natalie broke many individual records for the Lady Panther basketball team, setting school records in points, assists, threes, and free throw percentage. She also set the state record of 44 consecutive free throws made in her sophomore year and shot 51% from the 3-point line as a senior at EHS. She was a 5-year starter and a key part of the State Runner Up team in 2009. Her high school accolades include 5th Region Player of the Year in 2011, and News Enterprise Athlete of the Year in 2011. She was named to both the All-District and All-Region teams from 2007 to 2011, was Second Team All-State for three years, and was a member of the Kentucky All-Star Team in 2011. After a successful high school career, she went on to compete at Morehead State University, and began coaching after graduation.
Demond Thomas

Demond was a 3-star athlete, football, basketball, and baseball. In basketball, he scored 45 points in one game and all-time leading scorer until 2007. He was associated press Ky. Athlete of the year, member of the 2000 point club and 1st team all-state basketball 1990-91. Demond was co-Mr. Baseball state of Kentucky and an 8th round draft pick of the Chicago White Sox. 1st team all-state in baseball. He was also an outstanding football player as well.
Donnie Thomas

Donnie was a two-sport athlete who looked effortless on the basketball court and baseball diamond. As a basketball player, Donnie was an extremely skilled and complete player with an amazing left-handed jump shot and was one of the top average scorers. Donnie’s skill helped lead the Panthers to a Regional Championship title in 1975, a District Championship title for 3 consecutive years, and were Regional Runner-Ups in 1977. On the baseball diamond, Donnie was just as effective, leading the baseball Panthers to a State Championship title in 1975. As an individual, Donnie was selected two different years for the All- Area, All- District, and All- Region teams in basketball and in baseball, Donnie was selected to the Courier Journal’s 2nd Team All State and the Lexington Herald’s 1st Team All State.
Richard Thomas

Richard was an excellent three-sport athlete at Elizabethtown High School. Richard had a unique career, being on the 1969 State Football Championship team as a wide receiver. In 1970, he was the center fielder on the Baseball Championship team. Richard wasn’t finished as he was an integral part of the basketball team that went to the State Finals. Richard reached the State Championship game in all three major sports of his time, and being an important part of all three. He was an excellent team player. Richard made many All-Tournament teams and was voted to the KHSAA All-Tournament Team in basketball.
Shevan Threats

Shevan may have been the single most dominant and versatile female track and field athlete ever to compete for the Panthers. Shevan won individual regional titles in the 400m in both 1996 and 1997, the 200m in 1997, the high jump in 1997, and was part of the 4 x 200 relay champions in both 1996 and 1997. Shevan won individual state titles in the long jump in both 1996 and 1997, as well as the 400m in 1997, while taking third in 1997 in the high jump and as a part of the 4 x 200m relay. Shevan went on to compete at the University of Kentucky and was named the SEC sophomore of the year in 1999. As an SEC conference champion in 2001 in both the long jump and triple jump and finishing 3rd at NCAA, Shevan set a school record in the triple jump at 42’9” in the process.
Chris Todd

Chris holds the single season passing record at EHS. Chris helped the Panthers win two District Championships, one Regional Championship and one Semi State Championship, and state runner-up in 2003. Chris finished his career at Auburn University.
Jerry Turner

Jerry was a 3- sport athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and track. While Jerry considered himself a basketball player first, he was a gifted and standout athlete in everything he pursued, continuing to lead the Panthers in their strong athletic tradition of excellence. In 2004, Jerry set a state record as a receiver for yards and receptions, earning him a spot on football’s 1st Team All- State Team and was also 2nd Team All- State in 2003 as he led the Panther football team to a Region Championship as well as the 3-A State Runner-up. Jerry was an All- State performer on the track, leading the Panthers to the top of the podium in State for the 4 x 400 Relay as well as the long jump.
Whitney Valentine
Softball 2016
Whitney was not just a Softball pitcher, she was dominating. In 2003, Whitney, pitching for the Panthers, won 29 games as a pitcher. In her high school career, she had 51 shutouts. In the 2003 season alone, Whitney pitched 27 shutouts, and of those 27 shutouts, 14 were consecutive. Whitney’s earned run average from 2001-2004 was 0.36. She had 11 no-hitters, 3 perfect games, and 1,170 strikeouts. In one game alone, she struck out 34 batters in a game that lasted 19 innings. Whitney was the State leader thru 2015 with 15.5 strikeouts per game.
Charles Van Meter

Charlie was a four-year starter in football and basketball from 1944-48. In 1947 was all-district in basketball and a member of the All-Conference team (S.C.K.C.) in football. He received a football scholarship to UK but chose to go to Centre College where he played 4 years of basketball and football 1948-1952. Andrew Clay Johnson winner 1948.
David Van Meter

David is one of three generations of Van Meters who played football for EHS. David was an outstanding running back with his team posting a 12 win-1 loss record, losing in the AA State Championship. Scholarship to UK where he was a four-year defensive back.
Reginald Van Meter

Reggie was a 3 sports star in football, basketball, and baseball. His playing time was limited as no athletics at EHS his freshman year due to WWII. Reggie was captain of both teams' basketball and football. In basketball EHS lost to Ft. Knox, 30-29 finals of the tournament. Ft. Knox going to the semifinals state tournament. He was honored with the Andrew Clay Johnson award in 1946.
Ray Vencill

Coach Ray Vencill was an Elizabethtown High School graduate and the first coach in the history of the school to win a Regional Basketball Tournament and a spot in the Sweet 16 (1972). E-town was the State Runner-Up. Ray coached a total of 16 years with a record of 311 wins and 101 losses, for a winning percentage of 75.5%. His teams won 5 Region Championships and he was voted Kentucky High School Coach of the Year in 1970, 1972, 1975, and 1977. He played college basketball at Eastern Kentucky University.
Guy Wallace

Guy was a multi-sport athlete and 3-year letterman for the Panthers in both football and baseball. Individually, Guy was a member of the 1,000-yard rushing club at EHS, despite only playing in 8 games due to a broken ankle. Guy’s return led the Panthers to an exciting win over Ft. Knox for the 1987 Region Title, as well a team District Championship title, and the Semi- State Runner-Ups. Guy was named to the 1986 and 1987 All District Teams and the 1987 All- Region and All-State teams in football as a result of his efforts on the field. On the baseball field, Guy was also a standout athlete, with a .476 batting average and breaking Panther Hall of Famer, Mark Bradley‘s home run record his senior year. Guy led the diamond Panthers to a District Championship title in 1987 and 1988, as well a 1988 Region Championship title and was a starter in Kentucky’s East-West baseball All- Star game. Guy went on to play Division I baseball at the University of Louisville where he became a three-year letterman and was the recipient of the University of Louisville’s coveted Golden Glove Award as well as U of L’s Outstanding Athlete Award as a top student athlete on campus.
Donald “Bulleye” Walters

Bulleye was not only a terrific baseball and football player during his time as a student at E-town, but he also was a contributor during his entire career working for the school system. During high school he was an integral part of two state championship teams, the football class 2A state champions in 1969, and the baseball championship team in 1970, in which he was the team captain. He also was a part of the 1967 & 1968 Class 2A football state runners-up. His senior year he was selected to play in the East-West All Star football game. After his playing days were over, he spent countless hours making sure everything was prepared for any sporting event at E-town whether it was in a gym or on a field, often planning his day around mowing the football field. Not many people know he built the trophy case that in the high school to help display our schools’ trophies and awards. Also, the display that proudly houses the plaques of all the classes honored as part of this athletic hall of fame, he built by hand and installed. He is the epitome of the tradition of excellence that he has shown on and off the field.
Joe Welch

Joe was a two (2) sport athlete as a member of the football and track teams where he earned a total of 6 letters; 3 in football and 3 in track. He was a 3 year starter on the football team and was a member of the 1967 and 1967 state runner-up football teams. Joe was also co-captain of the football team and was 2nd team all-state his senior year. In track, Joe was 2nd team all-state in 1967 and was considered the fastest high school athlete in 1968. He was the AA state champion in the 100 yard dash and recorded the fastest time in the 220 yard dash. He was also selected as co-captain of the track team. Joe received a football scholarship to The University of Louisville where he is in the UofL record books.
Ryan Wheeler

Ryan was a standout for both the Panther baseball and football teams. He was a three-year starter for the Panther football team as a wide receiver and running back. In 1991, he rushed for more than 1,000 yards and was Honorable Mention All-State. Ryan was a member of three district champion teams, two regional champion teams, and two semi-state champion teams. The 1992 baseball team was state runner-up with Ryan as the team leader. He was a multiple-time All-District selection in addition to being All-Region and All-State. Ryan was named Area Player of the Year in 1992 when he hit just shy of .500. He played in the Junior/Senior All-Star Game both his junior and senior years. Ryan went on to play college baseball and was later drafted by the New York Yankees.
Cherie Whitman

Cherie was a three (3) sport athlete as a member of the basketball, track, and cross country teams where she earned a total of 12 letters; 4 in basketball, 4 in track, and 4 in cross country. Cherie was all district, all area, and all state honorable mention in 1988, 1989, 1990. Cherie was the leading scorer and rebounder for 4 years and she held the school record for scoring and rebounding until 2008. Cherie embodied "Panther Pride" by being a team leader, role model, and outstanding student. Cherie ran cross country for Georgetown College after graduation.

Chris was a leading member of the 2000 State Basketball Championship team. He was All District, All Regional, and an All-State Tournament selection. Chris was also All District and All Region in football and baseball.
Dr. Les Yates

Les had a reputation for being an extremely hard-working athlete. Les was a three sports star playing football and baseball, but basketball was his first love. He was a Courier Journal All-State selection in 1967. He attended Vanderbilt University on a basketball scholarship.
